There are 8 phases of the moon when viewed from Earth:
New Moon: The Moon is between the Earth and Sun, making the dark side face us; it is invisible.
Waxing Crescent: A small sliver of light appears on the right side.
First Quarter: The right half of the Moon is illuminated.
Waxing Gibbous: The illumination grows to more than half, but is not yet full.
Full Moon: The Sun fully illuminates the side facing Earth.
Waning Gibbous: The light begins to decrease, covering more than half.
Third Quarter: The left half of the Moon is illuminated.
Waning Crescent: A thin sliver of light remains on the left side.
